Your AccountID / Z-ID & Password
- Employees: Your AccountID is assigned to you when you are hired as an employee. Your account will remain active for 120 days after you leave NIU, then disabled for 90 days, after that deleted.
- Students: Your Z-ID is assigned to you when you are admitted to NIU. If you have not been enrolled in classes at NIU for one semester (not including summer), your Z-ID will be disabled. Access to all NIU resources will be prohibited. Any files you want to keep must be saved to an external media source before you leave.
- Student Employees: NIU Security Policy requires that employees must use their employee account for all work related duties and their student account for all student related activities.
You need your AccountID/Z-ID and password to access computing and communications services at NIU like:
- Blackboard
- MyNIU
- software applications on file servers
- computers in ITS and ResTech computer labs
- NIU student e-mail
- your network storage space (H: drive)
- network printers
- dial-in services
- wireless network connections on the DeKalb campus
Look up your AccountID / Z-ID
- Go to www.accountid.niu.edu
- Click on Look up your Z-ID / AccountID
- Enter your last name in the Last Name field
- Click Next - you'll see your name and your AccountID / Z-ID
Your Password
Your initial password is your date of birth in YYYYMMDD format. For example, 19820509 would be the initial password for a birth date for May 9, 1982. This is a temporary password. You need to change this password to a permanent password at www.password.niu.edu.
