Not receiving mail you do want?

Any technique for spam prevention has the possibility to unintentionally block "good" mail. Particular problems with listservs have been identified. ITS encourages all listserv recipients to add their listserv hosts to their permit lists. See Setting CanIt to Allow Listserv Mail.

Users who are concerned with messages being falsely identified as spam can do the following:

  • Add the e-mail addresses of senders whose messages are likely to be misidentified as spam to your personal Permit List.
  • Temporarily set your CanIt settings to "Tag-and-Deliver." You will receive the identified messages in your mailbox with their CanIt spam score added to the subject line of the message. Add the sender of any false positive to your "Permit List" (see above). When you tire of receiving the tagged spam messages and are confident you have identified any senders that may be generating false positives, return your CanIt settings to the "Default." See Available Spam Scanning Options.
  • Use the advanced interface to manage your own CanIt settings. This option allows you the greatest degree of control over how CanIt handles your mail. However, it also requires the greatest amount of manual effort on your part. You need to first Set up your CanIt Advanced Controls. Then directly access your CanIt settings by Using the CanIt Advanced Controls Spam Trap.

Complaints about false negatives usually far outweigh complaints about false positives (by a ratio of about 3:1).
