Mass emails can be an effective tool for communicating with targeted groups of students and/or employees. Approval is required for a message that is to be distributed to more than 100 recipients outside of the sender’s area of responsibility. The Office of Communications and Marketing processes mass email requests and can recommend appropriate distribution mechanisms.
If your message has less than 100 recipients, you can send it yourself through the university’s email system provided you follow the university’s mass mail requirements as outlined in the Electronic Mail Policy.
The CAN-SPAM Act applies to NIU e-mail regardless of the number of intended recipients if:
the content is of a commercial nature
there is no prior relationship with the recipients
