Errors while dialing in

If you are trying to dial into the NIU server and you get an error code stating "Error Code (650) The Remote Access server is not responding," or if you get disconnected immediately after getting connected, chances are you have an HSP56k MicroModem.

This modem has a problem negotiating a 56k(V.90) connection, hence its inability to connect.

First, confirm that you have a HSP56k MicroModem. To do this:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Open Modems.
  4. The modem name will be listed on this screen. An HSP modem is typically listed as: "HSP56K MICROMODEM".

Solution: Since this modem can not establish a 56k(V.90) protocol connection we need to tell the modem to connect using the V.34(33.6k) protocol.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Open Modems.
  4. Click on the "Properties" tab.
  5. Click on the "Connection" tab.
  6. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  7. In the "Extra settings" field type in "ATN0S37=12" (without the quotation marks).
  8. Click "OK."
  9. Click "OK."
  10. Click "Close."
  11. Reboot the machine.

Please note: this is a temporary fix. It basically disables your modem's 56k connection capability. Users are encouraged to contact the vendor for additional support.
