Anti-virus Tools

All computers connected to the NIU network should be running anti-virus software.

NIU has a campus-wide site license for McAfee anti-virus products. There are limited licenses for off-campus use by NIU faculty, students, and staff.

NIU's license for anti-virus software expires annually on June 30. Licenses in use must be renewed annually between July 1 and September 30 or the software must be removed from all devices. To renew your license, log in to the provisioning site listed below and enter the number of licenses you are using.

**Windows 8 Compatibility: McAfee 8.8 is fully compatible with Windows 8. However, the installer used by McAfee has not been certified. Because of this you will receive a message from Microsoft's "Program Compatibility Assistant." Select the "Run the program without getting help" option to continue the installation.

Updating McAfee VirusScan

McAfee VirusScan is configured to look for updates daily.

If you don't want to wait for the next scheduled search, you can run an update:

  1. Enter the VirusScan Console
  2. Highlight the option for "AutoUpdate"
  3. Click on the "Start" icon (the button with a green triangle pointing right)
  4. When the update is completed, click "Close"

McAfee Patches

Patches are released periodically and must be installed manually. The current McAfee download from ITS will contain the latest patch. A new patch is handled the same way as a new install.
